May 27, 2008: Vancouver — The judges have spoken! Gabrielle Miller has been named best-dressed celebrity on the Leo Awards Red Carpet. Meanwhile, best-dressed male honours go to Colin Cunningham, while Erin Cebula scores an honourable mention.

May 22, 2008: Vancouver — On Saturday, May 24 local and national media will be attending and covering the Leo Awards Red Carpet, where nominees, presenters, and guests will arrive for the Gala Awards Ceremony to follow. May 21, 2008: Vancouver — Only two days remains before the start of the Leo Awards 2008. “The Leo Awards celebrate our community and our industry’s body of work. Our 10th Anniversary edition promise to be a memorable event and we invite the entire community to celebrate with us,” says Walter Daroshin, Leo Awards president. “The event has sold out every year so we encourage everyone to get their tickets right away.”

Over the weekend of the Leo Awards, a total of 76 awards will be presented, including one Outstanding Achievement Award. In addition to rubbing shoulders with the Who’s Who of the film and television industry, Gala Ceremony guests this year will be greeted by the Leo Awards Red Carpet sponsored by The Bay. The Leo Awards will also be featured as a television special of Shaw TV’s The Express.

Tickets for the Leo Awards 2008 are still available. WARREN CARR TO RECIEVE Leo Awards 2008
OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD!


May 15, 2008: Vancouver — Warren Carr, a long-time veteran of the BC film and television industry has been selected to receive the Leo Awards 2008 Outstanding Achievement Award. Mr. Carr will be honoured on May 24 at the Leo Awards Gala Awards Ceremony.

“Warren’s career has made him an icon in West Coast film and television circles,” says Bernie Melanson, chair, Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Foundation of BC. “He is also a well-decorated individual with both an Emmy and a Christopher Award to his name — we look forward to presenting Warren with the 2008 Outstanding Achievement Award on our 10th Anniversary.”

Mr. Carr is a member of the Directors Guild of Canada, Directors Guild of America, Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, and Motion Picture Production Industry of BC (MPPIA). He is currently at the forefront of bringing sustainability to the BC entertainment industry and serves on the MPPIA Environmental Task Force.

Previous recipients of the Outstanding Achievement Award for an Individual include: Mr. Terry David Mulligan (2007), Ms Babz Chula (2006), Mr. Bob Scarabelli (post. 2005), Mr. John Juliani (post. 2004), Ms Shelley Gillen (2003), Mr. Crawford Hawkins (2002), Ms Dianne Neufeld (2001), Mr. Michael Francis (2000) and Mr. Daryl Duke (1999). CHANNEL M DIVERSITY IN CULTURES AWARDS RECIPIENT ANNOUNCED.


May 15, 2008: Vancouver — The Leo Awards and the Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Foundation of BC, along with Channel m, are pleased to present ‘One Big Hapa Family’ by Jeff Chiba Stearns with the Channel m Diversity in Cultures Award for 2008. The Channel m Diversity in Cultures Award will be presented to Mr. Chiba Stearns at the Leo Awards Gala Awards Ceremony on May 24, 2008.

“We received 13 submissions but ‘One Big Hapa Family’ was the one that stood out and best exemplified the values of the Channel m Award to bridge cultural understanding,” said Walter Daroshin, Leo Awards president.

Established in 2005, the Channel m Diversity in Cultures Award provides a cash prize of $10,000 towards the development or production of a script and/or concept of a Documentary Program promoting the ideals of diversity in the many cultures that make up British Columbia.

“Cultural diversity is one of the hallmarks that makes BC such a great place to live and we are pleased to support projects that recognize and celebrate this diversity,” says Tracy Yiu, Programming Supervisor for Channel m. “As a testament to the success of this program, we are delighted that Wesley Lowe’s ‘I Am the Canadian Delegate’, winner of the Diversity in Cultures Award in 2006, is now nominated for the Leo Awards in three Documentary categories.”

“Ten years is an important milestone and on this auspicious occasion we look forward to celebrating a decade of success and achievement with the entire BC film and television community,” said Walter Daroshin, Leo Awards president.

This year, the Leo Awards will also introduce a new evening format whereby the awards program will precede dinner service. Bernie Melanson, chair, Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Foundation of BC noted, “After consultation with the film and television community this past year, we decided that swapping the awards show and dinner would contribute to a more time-efficient evening since the formal part of the program will be completed by 8:00 each night.”

Leo Awards’ winners in 76 categories will be announced at two separate ceremonies where, in addition to Program and Craft awards, one Outstanding Achievement Award will be presented.

April 21, 2008: Vancouver — All nominees for the 10th Anniversary Leo Awards were announced today. In addition to the earlier announcement of select program categories included in the Leo Awards Film Festival, the list of nominees for the Leo Awards 2008 is now complete and can be viewed online at www.leoawards.com.

“BC’s film and television industry continues to inspire excellence and innovation,” says Leo Awards president Walter Daroshin. “And in this our tenth year, we salute the 2008 nominees and all the past nominees and winners that altogether have contributed to the legacy of the Leo Awards.”

To determine the final nominations, Lui Petrollini, partner at Ernst & Young Chartered Accountants LLP, tabulated the ballots of 47 jurors who adjudicated 750 eligible entries comprised of 131 program and 619 craft entries.

The Leo Awards honour programs in 9 categories including Feature Length Drama; Dramatic Series; Short Drama; Documentary Program or Series; Information or Lifestyle Series; Music, Comedy, or Variety Program or Series; Animation Program or Series; Student Production; and Music Video.

Sixty-three Craft awards will also be presented in the categories of Direction, Screenwriting, Cinematography, Picture Editing, Overall Sound, Sound Editing, Musical Score, Production Design, Costume Design, Make-Up, Visual Effects, and Performance or Host(s).

Winners in 76 categories will be announced at two separate ceremonies where Program and Craft awards will be presented, including one Outstanding Achievement Award.

CHANNEL M DIVERSITY IN CULTURES AWARD


Channel m along with the Leo Awards and The Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Foundation of British Columbia are proud to announce a Call for Entries for the fourth annual Channel m Diversity in Cultures Award

What Can Enter

Treatments or Story Outlines for a Documentary Program promoting the ideals of diversity in the many cultures that make up British Columbia.

Who Can Enter

It must be demonstrated that the directing mind and control of the creative and financial aspects of the Program will rest with British Columbia based individuals, defined as someone who is a Canadian citizen or has permanent residence status, and has maintained a residence in British Columbia for the 12 month period ending December 31, 2007.

Entry Requirements

Please submit the following:

  1. a one page treatment or story outline

  2. a development budget and financing scenario

After adjudication by a jury consisting of industry peers and representatives from Channel m, the successful applicant will be awarded a $10,000 cash prize towards the completion of the development or production of their Program.

Leo Awards 2008 OFF TO ANOTHER
STRONG START


March 20, 2008: VANCOUVER — Following the close of entries for the 10th Anniversary Leo Awards, the BC film and television awards program has received a total of 750 eligible entries, comprised of 131 program and 619 craft award entries.


“The enthusiasm and support we’ve had for the Leo Awards over the last 10 years has been very strong and this year is no exception,” said Walter Daroshin, Leo Awards president. “2008 is an exciting year because it’s our 10th Anniversary. In addition to celebrating our 2008 winners and nominees, we hope to share some highlights of the Leo Awards’ last decade with our community.”


The number of eligible entries received for the Leo Awards 2008 will result in a total of 76 awards that will be handed out this year, including one Outstanding Achievement Award.


Adjudication for the Leo Awards has already commenced. Ernst & Young, Chartered Accountants, will once again tabulate the results to determine the nominees for the Leo Awards 2008. Nominees will be announced the week of April 21 and will be posted on the Leo Awards web site www.leoawards.com.


The Leo Awards 2008 are sponsored by Northwest Imaging & FX, the Union of British Columbia Performers, ACFC West, The BMW Store, IATSE 891, and Kodak Motion Picture Film.


The Leo Awards were established in 1998 to celebrate excellence in British Columbia film and television. The Leo Awards 2008 Celebration and Gala Awards Ceremonies take place May 23 and 24 at the Westin Bayshore Vancouver.
