Vancouver wird gern auch als Hollywood des Nordens bezeichnet. Seit den 80er Jahren werden hier viele Film- und Fernsehproduktionen abgewickelt, u.a. aus finanziellen Gründen (Dollarkurs, Steuervorteile), aber auch weil sich in Vancouver seither sehr qualifiziertes Personal für alle Bereiche der Filmindustrie angesiedelt hat. Beispielsweise hat hier der deutsche Regisseur Uwe Boll einige seiner Filme gedreht.

Multi-award winning actor Juan Riedinger can add two new wins to his resume; taking home two LEO AWARDS at this year's awards ceremony. Juan won 'Best Performance in a Youth or Children’s Program or Series' for “R. L. Stine's The Haunting Hour”- Coat Rack Cowboy; and 'Best Performance in a Web Series’ for “Pavement” - Wake Up. The LEO AWARDS were distributed to the best in B.C. film and television this past weekend in Vancouver.

UBC Journalism alumni, Jodie Martinson (’10), has been nominated for four LEO AWARDS (BC Film and Television).
Her animated short, Stronghearted, has been nominated for a Leo in the Best Animation Program or Series category. She has also been nominated for her short TV documentary, Cue the Muse, in three categories: Best Short Documentary, Best Direction in documentary, and Best Picture Editing in a Documentary.

2013 Leo Award Finalists Announced
The Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Foundation of BC received a record number of entries for this year’s LEO AWARDS – 852 nominations, which reflects a 10% increase over the 2012 entries. The LEO AWARDS will be presented over two gala evenings this June 7th and 8th at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver. Tickets for the event are on sale now.
